Col. (ret.) Roy J. Hobbs Hanshi 
 

 
 
 

Col. Hobbs began his study of Judo and Jujutsu in 1958. He began his study of Karate in 1965 and also began studying Hakkoryu Jujutsu in the same year.

 

Col. Hobbs switched his study of Karate over to Seidokan Motoburyu in 1970. Currently Col. Hobbs is the senior most representative of Seidokan founder Shihan Toma in the western world.

 

Col. Hobbs was stationed all over the world and has lived in England, Japan and Okinawa over the years. While in Japan he trained with Ryuko Okuyama, Yashuhiro Ire in jujutsu and with Gogen Yamaguchi in Gojuryu. In Okinawa Col. Hobbs trained in Shorinryu with Seiki Toma and Shian Toma, in Gojuryu with Yoshio Kuba and Takahiro Shinjo and in Kobudo with Seikichi Odo.

 

Col. Hobbs has trained in Gojuryu tracing his lineage from himself to Takahiro Shinjo to Yoshio Kuba to Seikichi Toguchi and from himself to Boulafah Mimoun to Masanobu Shinjo and Kanei Nakasone to Seikichi Toguchi. Col. Hobbs current Gojuryu teacher is Yasuo Kawano who was a student of Masafumi Suzuki, who in turn was  a student of Eiichi Miyazato.

 

Col. Hobbs has founded several dojo in several countries. In 1994 he founded the Dentokan to govern all of his branch dojo and students.

 

Through out his training Col. Hobbs has obtained several senior grades in Karate, Kobudo, Jujutsu and Iaido. He was graded to Shorinryu Hanshi 10th Dan by Seiki Toma, Seidokan Hanshi 9th Dan by Shian Toma, Jujutsu Menkyo-kaiden by Yashuhiro Ire, and Gojuryu Hanshi 8th Dan by Yasuo Kawano, to name a few.
